7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Tremors Felt Across Regions Kathmandu Nepal– A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck a remote area of Nepal at 06:35 AM local time on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The epicenter was located approximately 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the border with Tibet, China, according to the US Geological Survey.
The tremors were felt strongly in Kathmandu, the capital city, which lies over 200 kilometers southeast of the earthquake’s epicenter. Witnesses reported buildings shaking and residents rushing into the streets for safety as aftershocks followed. Tremors were also felt in parts of northern India, including Delhi and Bihar, prompting concerns among residents in those regions.
As of now, there are no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. However, authorities are assessing the situation and urging residents to remain cautious as aftershocks continue to occur. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has been activated to monitor the situation closely and coordinate any necessary response efforts.
This earthquake comes nearly a decade after the devastating 2015 earthquakes that claimed thousands of lives and caused widespread destruction across Nepal. The country remains vulnerable due to its geographical location along the Himalayan fault lines.
